Townsville Weather

Townsville has a tropical climate, though has a lower rainfall than most other tropical locations.

The winter months can be described as delightful with fine days and little rain. The daytime temperature in winter is in the mid 20s.

Summer months are usually hot and humid. Tropical northern Australia generally experiences the build-up in late October or November. This is a time of steamy thunderstorms where humidity is high. Summer daytime temperatures are usually in the low 30s.

The highest rainfalls typically come between December and April. These are monsoonal rains that can sometimes come with tropical cyclones and can cause flooding.

Conditions are rarely severe. The Bureau of Meteorology says that a 20 year cycle of more severe tropical storms are typical in and around Townsville.

The average annual rainfall is 1143mm over an average of 91 rainy days. Most of this rain will fall in the six month wet season between November and April.

Townsville Geography

Townsville is built on a strip of flat, low-lying plain. At a height of 283 metres, Castle Hill (known also as Mount Cutheringa) offers a stunning contrast to the surrounding lowlands.

The city has developed around the base of this rise.  Townsville and its hinterland is itself encircled by a larger ring of mountains.

The most prominent nearby peak is Mt Stuart at 610 metres, followed by Mount Louisa and Many Peaks Range.

Townsville’s regional population is 160,000, with some 100,000 residents in Townsville city itself.
