Charters Towers
About Charters Towers
Charters Towers is mostly known for its gold mining history and outback character.
Journeying 135 kilometres southwest of Townsville takes you to what many would say is the real Australia.
Here you will find a town brim full of history and looking like a typical old Queensland town, with its wide streets and wooden shop fronts under shadey awnings.
If you are curious, the Charters Towers story is an absorbing one.
In its heyday, the Towers was Queenslands largest city outside of Brisbane. In those days it was affectionately known as The World. It was said that anything one desired could be found in the Towers, leaving no reason to travel anywhere else.
From its peak population of 30,000 in that time of gold rush, Charters Towers is now a community of some 8,000. Today Charters Towers is a regional centre for mining, beef and education.
